Crystal Flores Phillip's Journey

Phillip’s Journey
In the Cay our hero Phillip leaves home with his mother because of the war that was going on (world war two.) His mother also hates Willemstad, Curacao because it also smells like oil and she is prejudice against black people. Phillip is then separated from his mother when the SS Hato was torpedoed. He wakes up upon a raft with a black man named Timothy. During the next few months many things happened which transformed Phillip into a young independent boy. He creates a better world for himself because he is now mature and no longer feels like he should be prejudice. Phillip’s calling was that his mom was afraid of the war. Although Phillip’s parents argued about weather they should stay or not. They both decided that it was best that they leave. Phillip and his mother began there journey back to America on the SS Hato. It is then that it was torpedoed. Phillip is then on a raft with an unfamiliar black man in the middle of the Caribbean. Phillip becomes blind. After a couple of days they find an island. Timothy is Phillip’s mentor that helps him become a better person. Phillip acts like a brat so Timothy slaps him. Then he finds out that Timothy was just trying to help him. A couple days later Timothy gets sick and Phillip has to take care of him. He never gains his strength back. Phillip learns how to fish and climb palm trees. After a big storm Timothy dies and Phillip is left all alone. Phillip immediately gets to work. He even tries to dive for langasta. He then finds out how to make black smoke which leads to his rescue and returns home. Phillip has matured and overcomes his prejudice, with the help of Timothy. Phillip’s story reveals a true hero’s journey. Phillip proves himself to be an epic true hero.
