A calling is reason to go somewhere (out into the world). In the book The Cay, the calling was that Phillip’s mother was afraid of the war and she didn’t want to be there anymore. The threshold was when Phillip’s parents argued weather they should go or stay. A descent is where it’s the beginning of the journey into the unknown. In the book it was when Phillip and his mother began their trip back to America.
